Just For Myself

Today, trial begins. Jury selection - voir dire. Interesting times to come I'm sure. For now, I'll linger here in the solitude and in the quiet, for myself.

Nothing new to me. "Wish I may, wish I might . . . "

May it please the Court.

My name is Shelby Dupree and I am counsel for the . . .

This is a case about a girl who tried to beat the odds (and still will).

She went to law school last year at age forty (ok, now it's been a couple years and now I'm early mid-forties), with a husband and two teenagers in tow. She worked her @#$ off, and is now working full time as a para "worker" - a job she would almost do for free because she enjoys it so (I just got a very small raise, so I actually do the job for almost free).

She loves the law. Pure and simple, and she'll never do anything else.

The law is an addiction - Shelby's all consuming passion.

"The issue here is the rule of law." - spoken by Judge Michael P. Mills, U.S. District Court, Northern District of Mississippi, in a recent sentencing hearing in a tragic case of corruption too close to home for comfort.

I'm a southerner, in the true-ist sense of the word. I'm an old soul, my accent is sweet and I simply adore the story telling of my people - and Pat Conroy is one of the best storyists evuh.
